    Basketball Spirit Week

Last week our school had three spirit days before the girls and boys basketball tournament.

Wednesday was Hat Day! One of our friends gave David a fake beard and he turned it into hair:

I wore a hat in support of my alma mater:

Both the elementary and secondary students loved hat day! I was so happy to see so many participate:

Thursday was Tacky Sweater Day. I didn’t take as many photos this day. I wish I had gotten one of David! One of our friends told me they couldn’t help but laugh when they saw him disciplining a student while wearing one of my cardigans.

We also had a pep assembly on Thursday. See the cute sign my cheerleaders made?

Friday was a half day and School Colors Day. The kids played in the basketball tournament on Friday and Saturday. There was a great turnout of teachers, students, and families. The teams played really hard! The girls placed third and the boys placed sixth. We also had some All-Tournament players.

    Cheering for Basketball

I have 11 elementary girls on my cheerleading squad this year. We started practicing in October and they cheered at their first basketball game last week. They were so excited to support the teams!

My mom brought some sparkly yellow ribbon when she visited for their hair:

    Everybody yell Oasis!

The crowd was very sweet and supportive. Some of the high school kids learned a few of the chants and cheered right along with them:

Both the boys and the girls basketball teams won. The girls can’t wait to cheer at the next game!

My Cheerleaders at their First Game

I didn’t think there’d be a basketball game before winter break, but our athletic director was able to schedule one. I was excited because that meant the cheerleaders finally got to cheer at a game! We tried to attend the last volleyball game, but weren’t able to get base access at that time.

A teacher friend and I have met with the cheerleaders once a week for an hour since August to practice moves, jumps, cheers, and routines. We have 20 girls on our squad. Because the games were scheduled last minute, not all of the cheerleaders were able to attend, but we still had a great turn out:

The girls did an awesome job! I think the crowd enjoyed watching them almost as much as the game. These girls have a lot of spirit! This was the first basketball game several of them had ever been to. I attempted to answer as many questions as I could about the sport.

I was especially glad we got a game in so this one had a chance to cheer. She moved to North America this week. She’ll be very missed!

The girls mostly cheered from the stands, but they went down to the floor during a couple of time-outs to perform. They were a little nervous at first, but I think they were loving it by the end:

The high school basketball teams played extremely well and both the boys and the girls won. It was a great first game!

    Oasis Cheerleaders

I’ve been helping coach the 3rd through 7th grade cheerleaders. We meet once a week to practice cheers, jumps, basic stunts, and dances.

Several basketball games were cancelled this year, including the big tournament. The school arranged one final game for Monday. The girls were super excited not only to cheer, but also for their first ever halftime performance! They worked hard in practice to perfect their stunt groups:

We found out the day of the game that the other team dropped out. We didn’t want the players and the cheerleaders to be disappointed again. Since we had already rented the space, the teachers and parents quickly assembled teams.

The cheerleaders used a projector and markers to create a  good luck sign earlier in the semester, and we hung it up in the gym:

David and Daniel played in the men vs. boys game. Both student teams beat the adults.

My friend has done a fantastic job coaching the cheerleaders! It’s been fun for me to help. She has thought of everything, even down to the hair ribbons with super cute glitter paw prints (our mascot is the lion):

The girls performed 3 short cheers and chants for their halftime show. The last cheer ended in thigh stand formations. The girls were so cute and did a really great job!

I think it worked out well that the game was student vs. staff. It was laid back and took a lot of pressure off of the cheerleaders, especially with it being their first performance. What a sweet group of girls!
